Currently in construction, the stage’s seven development parcels have been
leased to Rockrose Development Corp. Three of the residential buildings are
complete and occupied. The four remaining buildings are in varying stages of
design. When all buildings are complete, Stage 2 will include approximately
2,800 units of housing. The next Rockrose residential building is scheduled to
break ground in early 2010.
A 25,000 square-foot parcel in Stage 2 is also being reserved for a second
public school for 600 students (pre-kindergarten through grade 8), to be
constructed by the New York City School Construction Authority. Construction of
the school is scheduled to begin later this year and to be complete in 24
months.
A multipurpose sportsfield in Stage 2 was open to the public last July and is
being operated by QWDC prior to transfer to State Parks. Construction of an
additional five acres of waterfront parkland in Stage 2 is currently underway,
and a major new section of will open this summer.
Environmental remediation of the northernmost portion of Stage 2 is also nearing
completion. This work is being done by TRC under contract with Rockrose
Development Corp.
Following completion of environmental remediation, QWDC will complete
construction of additional roadways, utilities, and parkland, including an
extension of the waterfront esplanade and passive recreational space. QWDC
recently awarded a construction contract to complete this work, and work is
anticipated to start this summer. All of QWDC’s construction work is expected to
be complete by 2012.
The neon-lit, 65-year-old Pepsi sign has been relocated to its permanent
location in the northern section of the future parkland.
